The Simpsons: Road Rage is a driving game based on The Simpsons developed by Radical Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts under license from Fox Interactive. It is the first Simpsons game for the sixth generation consoles. It was released in 2001 for the PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox, with a Game Boy Advance version developed and published by Altron and THQ respectively released two years later.

Bad Qualities

  1. The gameplay is a shameless and shallow clone of Crazy Taxi, but with an in-game map, and no speed boosts. In fact, Sega filed a lawsuit against EA for plagiarism and ended up winning.
  2. Loose controls and poor vehicle handling makes exploring the levels a chore.
  3. The areas themselves suffer from unimaginative design and lack of cohesion.
  4. There are no insane stunts to pull off like in Crazy Taxi and there are very few ways to earn extra cash along the way.
  5. Mission mode's missions consist of nothing more than either getting from one area to another before Mr. Burns gets you, or smashing a certain amount of things before you run out of time.
  6. The loading times last for thirty to thirty-five seconds, which is almost as long as the missions take to be completed.
  7. There's no rewarding for completing the missions aside from unlocking a new car.
  8. Head-to-Head mode suffers from a loss of balance.
  9. Low-quality visuals.
  10. The framerate chugs when there's a lot of action.

Good Qualities

  1. It includes 17 playable characters from the show.
  2. It has hilarious voice-clips from the characters' original actors.
  3. The areas have lots of landmarks from the show, both well-known and obscure.
  4. The GBA version is pretty impressive, as it has stages with slopes and inclines, while most driving games released on the GBA simply featured flat tracks (such as Mario Kart: Super Circuit).
  5. This game got a remake in The Simpsons Hit and Run as a mod called Road Rage Returns, by the Donut Team modding community.

Reception

The Simpsons: Road Rage received mixed reviews, with Metacritic scores of 67 on GameCube, 64 on PS2, and 61 on Xbox.
